13,000 Feet of Aging Water Main to be Replaced in Plainfield Township

Pennsylvania American Water announced Tuesday the start of construction to replace more than 13,000 feet of aging water main in Plainfield Township to improve service reliability for customers and increase water flows for firefighting. The cost of the system improvements, which replace water main dating back to the 1920s, is approximately $2.3 million.

Starting this week, the company will replace existing eight-inch cast iron water mains with new 16-inch ductile iron pipe along Sullivan Trail between Route 512 and Sexton Road. Pennsylvania American Water also plans to install a new pressure-reducing station as part of the project, as well as relocate 13 existing fire hydrants.

For reference, Sexton Road sits between Jeff's Cars and Royal Gourmet Foods, and Route 512 leads into Wind Gap.

Crews will work weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic disruptions are expected during construction, and motorists are advised to find alternate routes. The company expects to complete the water main installation, transfer of customer services and final paving restoration by spring 2013.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure.
