Reactions Mixed on Starting School After Labor Day

The debate rages on about starting school before or after Labor Day.

To some, it's a tradition.

Summer unofficially ends on Labor Day, the last chance for kids to soak up the sun before sucking it up to face another school year.

But in Nazareth and across the Lehigh Valley and Pennsylvania, school starts before Labor Day.

Some Nazareth Patch Facebook fans believe it should start after Labor Day like when they were kids.

"A debate that upsets many. Parents will still plan vacations during the school year and pull their kids out of school. And then complain about their responsibility to make sure that missed schoolwork is made up. These aren't new ideas or rules," Joseph Free said. "Sometimes life isn't fair."

"When we were kids it always started the Wednesday after Labor Day. We didn't have a week for spring break which when in March is a waste. The kids should enjoy all the summer they can," Marie Keglovitz Repash said.

"Yes! It makes no sense for the kids to go back then immediately have a 3 or 4 day holiday weekend for Labor Day, when they're trying to adjust to the back-to-school schedule," Patrice Moser Steckel said.

Not everyone agrees though.

"I don't think the should delay the opening. I like the fact that they are done in early June to get the summer started early. What they need to do is reduce the number of half days and long weekends. Why is it necessary for them to have a four day weekend? I don't get one," Lou Wesely said.
