Vigilance Hose Co. No. 1 Issues Statement on Hurricane Sandy

As Hurricane Sandy moves into the Lehigh Valley, Vigilance Hose Co. No. 1 asks area residents to 'stay safe and be smart.'

The president of Vigilance Hose Co. No. 1, Carl Strye Jr., issued a statement Monday afternoon to remind residents of a few important points as Hurricane Sandy barrels through the Lehigh Valley.

"Everyone had plenty of time to prepare so we all hope everyone did take the proper precautions," Strye wrote in an e-mail to Patch.

Strye advised residents to use Northampton County's non-emergency number --(610) 759-2200 -- for non-life threatening incidents.

"Please be patient," he stressed, adding that emergency responders will prioritize calls. "[All local fire departments] are prepared and are ready to respond, however, we can only do so much at one time."

  • Only travel if it's absolutely necessary. With a lot of leaves, trees and wires lying across roads, conditions will be dangerous.
  • Candles should be constantly monitored. DO NOT leave your home with candles burning.

Volunteer firefighters will be stationed at the firehouse Monday night. If you need assistance or have any questions, the doors will be open.

Strye ended his e-mail with, "Stay safe and be smart."
