New Hope Woman, 80, Vying For Title Of 'Sexiest Vegan Over 50'

NEW HOPE, PA — A 80-year-old New Hope woman is vying for the title of "Sexiest Vegan Over 50." April Silverman beat out entrants from across the country to advance to the final round of six contestants in PETA's competition, the organization announced Monday.

The winners — one man and one woman — will each receive an eight-day trip to India, courtesy of VegVoyages—Vegan Adventure Tours.

According to information from PETA, Silverman has been vegan for half her life. She is an advocate for animal rights, and has even persuaded a few friends to follow her lead and go vegan, too, PETA said.

"At 80 years old, this vegan powerhouse is unstoppable, spending hours a day writing letters and making phone calls for animals—not to mention her weekly yoga classes and art lessons," according to Silverman's bio on the competition's website.

"April Silverman's compassionate choice to steer clear of meat and dairy 'products' for decades has made a world of difference for animals and made her a vegan force to be reckoned with," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Each of the finalists in PETA Prime's Sexiest Vegan Over 50 contest is a testament to how attractive vegans of all ages are, inside and out."

PETA will choose the winners based on several factors, including a vote on PETA's website.

Voting for the finalists to help PETA Prime determine which ones it should select as the winners ends on Oct. 16. Winners will be announced on Oct. 22.
