New, Independent Grocer Planning Spring Opening In New Hope

Poppy's Greengrocer, opening soon in New Hope, will feature a variety of local products, a snack bar, and a zero-waste pantry program.

NEW HOPE, PA — A new independently owned local food market is preparing for its spring opening in New Hope.

Poppy’s Greengrocer will be opening at 415 York Road, near Jamie Hollander Gourmet Foods & Catering. The 4,000-square-foot store is aiming to become Pennsylvania’s first Certified B-Corp Grocery Store.

The store will offer local and organic products, including produce and flowers, grass-fed meat, sustainably caught seafood, dairy and frozen items, sustainable home goods, and more.

Poppy’s Greengrocer is the brainchild of Jennifer Brodsky, co-founder of the locally-based national food and farm consulting group, Kitchen Table Consultants. She has more than 18 years of experience in food, retail and farming. Her past experience includes market manager of Montgomery County’s first Certified Organic farm, General Manager of Terrain, and more.

Poppy's won't be your average grocery store, according to owners.

"Poppy’s will work directly with local farmers to create a retail food hub and community market that celebrates the rich landscape of our local agriculture and offers best in class products and shopping experience. Everything we do will align with our values of hospitality, equity, and commitment to the earth," owners said in an announcement released this week.

The store's business includes a profit-sharing model and ownership for key local producers that will keep farmers farming.

It was also feature Poppy’s Snack Bar, driven by culinary director Chadd Jenkins, former chef-owner of acclaimed Philadelphia restaurant, Little Fish. The snack bar will be centered around a wood-fired hearth. "Simple, modern and delicious, the menu will rotate with the farmers’ harvests, and feature sourdough wood-fired pizza, bread and weekend bagels, bone broth noodle bowls, composed salads to pair with a rotating selection of local nitro coffee and kombucha on tap," owners said in the announcement.

Poppy's will also offer a zero-waste pantry program — a new kind of bulk section that utilizes an innovative reusable container program to reduce waste.

"You’ll have access to all the organic pantry staples you need to make a delicious meal, without the waste and unnecessary packaging," according to the store's announcement.

To get customers up to speed on the zero-waste pantry program, Poppy’s will offer a variety of classes and pop-up events to educate the community.

The Poppy’s team is comprised of longtime food industry experts, including:

  • Christa Vigilante as General Manager. She brings years of hospitality excellence from Thomas Keller Restaurant Group’s Bouchon Bakery in New York City.
  • Ted LeBow, Jen’s Co-Founder and Principal at Kitchen Table Consultants, as CFO.
  • Jen Herczeg, a veteran of Whole Foods Market, Chipotle and Di Bruno Bros., will support the marketing strategy.
