The new traffic configuration is a "cost effective" safety improvement project addressing a concern that the town has discussed for nearly 20 years, according to NJDOT. "The project is designed to improve safety and mobility for all users of the road. Reducing the two lanes to one, which is known as a road diet, is a proven traffic calming design," a NJDOT announcement said.
U-turns will be restricted to two locations – one at Weeden Street and another at the first cut out in the median when driving north. As part of the project, there will be dedicated U-turn lanes to help prevent queing if a vehicle is waiting to make a U-turn.
