Philadelphia Region Getting New Area Code
We know 215 and 267 but there's a new area code joining the Philadelphia region next month.

Editor's note: Due to incorrect information provided on Verizon's website, an earlier version of this article stated the 445 area code would be coming this weekend. In fact, it is expected to begin March 3, not Feb. 3. Patch regrets the confusion.
We know 215 and 267 but a third area code will join the Philadelphia region starting next month, according to Verizon.
As soon as March 3, some customers in the region currently served by 215 and 267 will receive 445 as an area code for new numbers, Verizon says on its website. It's called the 445 overlay.

According to Verizon, an overlay is the addition of another area code to the same geographic area as an existing area code or codes. Your existing number won't change, but be aware that you might be given a 445 area code if you establish a new number in the future.
Verizon has shared a map on its website of the area included in the overlay. It includes all of Philadelphia and parts of Bucks, Montgomery, Lehigh and Berks counties.

According to the Pennsylvania Utility Commission, Pennsylvania had four area codes up until 1997. The four area codes included 814 (northwest), 412 (Pittsburgh area), 717 (central) and 215 (Philadelphia). "With the increased use of cell phones and consumers purchasing additional lines in their homes, the demand for additional telephone lines exploded," the PUC's website explains.
Several area codes have been added in the state since then, including 610 and 484 in the eastern part of the state.
