5 Charged With Theft Following Incidents At Newtown Township Stores

Newtown Township Police charge five with retail theft, investigate reports of gift card draining scam.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA ? Four women and one man are facing retail theft charges following incidents at the Lululemon store and Ulta Beauty at the Village at Newtown Shopping Center.

On Sunday, Dec. 10 at about 4:30 p.m., Newtown Township Police were dispatched for retail thefts in progress at Ulta Beauty and Lululemon.

As a result of the investigation, four women were arrested and charged with retail theft ? taking merchandise, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, and evading arrest or detention on foot.

During the course of another retail theft investigation, police were notified of an additional retail theft that occurred at Lululemon on Dec. 11. The investigation is ongoing.

And on December 14 around 3:30 p.m., police responded to Ulta Beauty for the report of a retail theft in progress.

As a result of the investigation, a man was arrested and charged with retail theft ? taking merchandise, evading arrest or detention on foot, and resisting arrest.

Police also reported the following incidents between Dec 9 and 14:

Saturday, December 9

  • At approximately 2 a.m. police conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan sedan operator for committing a vehicle code violation in the area of Windy Bush Road and Williams Avenue. As a result of the investigation, suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia were discovered and seized as evidence. Charges are pending.
  • Around 6 p.m., police were contacted in regards to a fraud involving gift cards being stolen and replaced with fakes in a grocery store. The investigation is ongoing. Read more about the scam here.

Wednesday, December 12

  • The Newtown-Makefield Truck Enforcement Unit conducted a commercial vehicle safety detail in the area of the Newtown Bypass and Campus Drive in Newtown Township. The unit is made up of officers from Newtown Township, Newtown Borough and Upper Makefield. During the detail, 24 trucks were stopped and inspected, one citation and 19 warnings were issued for violations that were found. One truck was placed out of service.

Thursday, December 14

  • A Newtown Township resident responded to headquarters shortly before noon to report fraud. The resident explained that someone contacted him through Microsoft Teams with a job opportunity. They sent him an employment contract to sign and a check for $80,000 that he deposited into his bank. The resident did not realize it was a scam until the bank notified him that the check was fraudulent. The resident did not suffer a monetary loss and the incident was documented.
  • At 12:05 p.m. police responded to Shir Ami after receiving an email threat of a bomb scare at its facility on the Richboro Road. For the safety of the children, the synagogue made the decision to evacuate the children from the school and notified the department. An immediate police response by Newtown Township Police and Newtown Emergency Services was initiated, and the facility was searched by school and police personnel and canines with negative findings. Children were temporarily relocated to an alternate site while the search was conducted. Investigators and the FBI are coordinating the investigation following the reports of other bomb scares at synagogues across the state.
  • Around 3 p.m., police were contacted in regards to a fraud involving more gift cards being stolen and replaced with fakes in a grocery store. The investigation is ongoing at this time. Read more about the scam here.
