WARRINGTON, PA — Amazon will soon open its first grocery store in Pennsylvania.

The tech giant has confirmed plans to open four locations on the East Coast and is currently hiring for positions at its planned located in Warrington Township.

Rumors began circulating in June of last year that Amazon planned to open a grocery store at the former Giant store on Easton Road in the Creekview Center, near Target and Lowe's.

"It was one of the worst kept secrets in town," said Fred Gaines, chair of the Warrington Township Board of Supervisors.

Amazon opened its first "Fresh" grocery store in Los Angeles, California, in September and has since added 10 more locations across the U.S., including throughout Southern California and several suburbs of Chicago.

Unlike Amazon-owned Whole Foods, Fresh stores are geared more toward the middle-income customer and include a dedicated area for shoppers to pick up and return Prime packages.

Warrington Township Manager Barry Luber said the grocery store will be a welcome addition to the township.

"Competition's always good, and the more choices we have for our residents the better," Luber said.

Amazon has not announced an opening date for the location, but the company is "already stocking shelves" at the store, Luber said.

Gaines said the township is looking forward to filling a property that's largely been vacant since Giant left in 2013.

"Most importantly, with an Amazon store, we're entering into the modern era," he said.

An Amazon spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
