Congressman Fitzpatrick visits Newtown Middle School

Eighth grade students asked the congressman to speak about federal debt and terrorism.

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick spoke to Newtown Middle School students Tuesday about several issues, including the national debt.

According to a press release, eighth grade students wrote to Fitzpatrick earlier this year, asking him to speak to the students about the debt and the need for a balanced budget.

“Like my students, Congressman Fitzpatrick understands the impact out-of-control federal spending will have on the next generation,” history teacher Joe Fabrizio said. “I am glad he was able to speak to my class about his efforts to make other members of Congress aware of this threat.”

The congressman also addressed the students about the threat of terror groups like ISIS, and his work as chair of the bipartisan Task Force to Investigate Terrorism Financing.

“Money has become the frontline in the fight against terrorism,” Fitzpatrick said. “To confront, and ultimately defeat, terror groups, we need to choke off the flow of money that funds their acts. Working with experts and lawmakers from both parties, this task force will have the information needed to shape a modern, impactful response to the complexities of terror financing that can serve as the cornerstone for Congress and the administration’s anti-terror strategy.”
