Happy Mother’s Day From Fred Pendergest

"You did it all, with so much love and dedication that you made it appear effortless."

In celebration of Mother's Day on Sunday May 13, we asked Patch readers to write a letter to their mother and let us deliver it. This is Fred Pendergest's letter to his mom:

Dear Mom,

It’s going on eight years since you've entered the gates of heaven. I wish there was another day you were still here, to hug and thank you for doing all that you did for your seven children.

As I look back, you went above and beyond, making homemade Halloween costumes, book bags sewn and embroidered with our nicknames and names, knitted sweaters, home-cooked meals every night and laundry seven days a week. You had two clothes lines constantly holding all our clothes to dry off, even if they were frozen from the cold winter air, and suffered the occasional bee sting from a bee caught within our clothing.

I never realized the time, effort and work you did to see that our clothes were washed and that the refrigerator and panty were stocked, until I was living on my own. You did it all, with so much love and dedication that you made it appear effortless. At night I would fall asleep hearing the soothing sounds of your sewing machine, creating the next piece of clothes, book bags, gloves or hat for us to receive.

You loved us and disciplined us as we needed it all at the same time. My brothers, sisters and I are blessed to have had a mother who really cared and loved us all. You showed us daily, even when being so young and immature, that you had our best interests in mind and heart.

Thank you Mom, for all you did. As I grow older, I can answer from my heart, you knew it better, and acted in our best interests. I love, miss and appreciate you for doing the best you knew how, with all that was available. Thank you, Mom, for everything.

With tear-filled eyes, I write this: You have shown me what love is, rearing us kids up to be the best we can strive to be. I love you Mom, and always will.

Until I see you again, your loving and appreciating son,
Fred
