The site housed the first tavern in Newtown and was named the Red Lion Inn by George Welch between 1726 and 1728 and ran as a tavern until 1858. It was also the site of a Revolutionary War battle where five men were killed, four were wounded and 32 were captured by British forces.
The building got its name when Newtown artist Edward Hicks painted a sign featuring the Benjamin Franklin quote, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."
