Joe Paterno Elected to Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame

Paterno coached at Penn State for more than four decades but his legacy was tarnished by a sex scandal involving Jerry Sandusky.

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has been elected to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Paterno, who died in 2012 after battling cancer, coached the team for more than four decades.

He won a record 409 games, but his legacy has been overshadowed by the Penn State sex abuse scandal involving Jerry Sandusky. Paterno was dismissed from his coaching job amid fallout from the scandal and fell ill shortly after.

Paterno led the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and two national championships. He coached more than 250 players who went on to compete in the NFL. He coached at Penn State for 46 years, from 1946-2011.

Each year, 10 living and two deceased athletes or coaches are inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame, according to ESPN.

The ceremony will be in October, according to TIME.

The state Hall of Fame approached Paterno several years ago but he declined to pursue the offer, because he didn’t know if he could make a ceremony on a football Saturday, ESPN reported.
