Many urban environments provide sufficient space and food for small population of waterfowl. However, as waterfowl concentrate in urban areas they can lose their fear of people and the birds’ natural pattern of migration.
Feeding waterfowl can be harmful to the wildlife. A duck’s or geese normal diet includes aquatic vegetation, insects and mollusks. Bread, popcorn and other food are not a natural part of their diet and can cause serious health problems. The end result of this seemingly kind and generous act can cause health problems as well as the birds becoming a nuisance. Next time, please consider the potential consequences before feeding ducks or geese in your community.
