The Newtown tradition of painting State Street store windows with Halloween scenes dates back to the 1950s. The practice lapsed for a while after the turn of this century, but members of the Newtown business community brought it back to life.

Hundreds of individuals, families, adult artists, art classes, Brownie and Girl Scout groups and others have participated since the Halloween window painting returned to the street.

The weeks immediately following the painting typically bring people to town to enjoy the Halloween scenery and exploring the town?s many businesses.

Newtown will also participate in the annual Gold Pumpkins for the Cure campaign. Families, groups, and individuals are invited to decorate a pumpkin, incorporating the color gold on behalf of children's cancer awareness.

For every Gold Pumpkin that?s created, the Little Hero Foundation will donate $1, up to $10,000, to support the cause. The decorated pumpkins will be displayed throughout the Newtown business district for the public to enjoy. Prizes will be awarded for the top three winners.

Decorated pumpkins labeled with your contact information and optional artist bio should be dropped off on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Countryside Gallery during the window painting event.

Here are the three steps to take to decorate your gold pumpkins:

  • Decorate: Decorate a pumpkin incorporating the color gold using any creative technique you choose. The sky's the limit for your Gold Pumpkin creation. GOLD symbolizes the resilience of childhood cancer heroes.
