Man Fails Miserably In Attempt To Drive Across North Park Lake

A 24-year-old man tried to drive his SUV across the partially frozen lake Wednesday night. The outcome wasn't positive.

McCANDLESS, PA — An SUV remained partially submerged in North Park Lake Thursday after a man's ill-conceived attempt to drive across it Wednesday night.

The vehicle's back end broke through the ice as the 24-year-old driver was traveling across what he believed to be a fully frozen body of water. He was uninjured.

The stunt occurred as Allegheny County Police Department District 3 commander Lt. Scott Scherer reminded people this week on social media that the only recreation activity permitted on North Park Lake is ice fishing.

Hiking, ice skating or playing hockey on the ice is prohibited and violations to the county ordinance are punishable by a fine of up to $300.

Scherer said he understands that with schools not being fully opened, kids are looking for something to do but it isn't safe to be skating or playing hockey on the lake.

"Our officers do not enjoy being the 'fun police' but they have been talking to the youth and explaining to them why we cannot allow it," he said. "Although not happy, most were polite and understanding. So far, nobody has been issued a citation."

It was unclear if the driver of the SUV will be cited.
