Election 2017: Your Guide To North Hills Races

Here's what you need to know about the races for North Hills school board, Ross commissioners and West View council.

ROSS TOWNSHIP, PA - With the Nov. 7 election rapidly approaching, here’s what’s at stake in the North Hills:

NORTH HILLS SCHOOL BOARD

There are four seats up for grabs on the nine-member board. Seven candidates were nominated to fill them in May, including the four directors who currently hold the seats. All candidates cross-filed in the primary. Here’s how they fared:

Attorney; seeking first term on the board.

Marketing and communications professional; seeking first term on the board.

Strategic planning consultant; seeking second term on the board.

Marketing and special events manager for the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute; current board vice president.

Quality engineer and chem lab supervisor at ATI Powder Metals; seeking second term on the board.

  • Janet Lukac: 2,014

Personal banker; seeking first term on the board.

  • Kathy Reid (I) : 1,889

West View retiree; seeking third term on the board.

ROSS COMMISSIONERS

Four of the nine seats are open.

  • Second Ward

Democratic incumbent Steve Korbel an attorney with Babst Callands, faces Republican James Knox, a former Pittsburgh Tribune-Review photographer.

  • Fourth Ward

The Democratic candidate is Joseph Laslavic, a Shaler Area School District teacher who ousted three-term incumbent Lana Mazur in the primary. He’ll face Republican Casey O’Donnell.

  • Sixth Ward

The Democratic candidate is Jason Pirring, a Shaler Area School District teacher who ousted incumbent David Mikec in the primary. He’ll face Republican Matthew Edlinger.

  • Eighth Ward

Democratic incumbent Jeremy Shaffer faces no Republican opposition on the ballot.

WEST VIEW COUNCIL

Democratic Mayor John Henry faces no Republican opposition. For the four open council seats, Democrats Robert Schellhass, Bryan Kircher, William Aguglia and Eugene Borio have no GOP opponents on the ballot.
