North Hills Junior High Plans African Drumming Workshop

Prosper Ayimbota, a musician and drum maker from West Africa , will lead the workshop and demonstrate how to play the Djembe drum and discuss how drums are made.

 will offer an African drumming workshop from 3–4 p.m. March 29.

The workshop is open to members of the school’s World Drumming Ensemble and their families as well as North Hills junior and senior high school music students.

Prosper Ayimbota, a musician and drum maker from West Africa, will lead the workshop. He will teach participants how to play the Djembe drum and provide a basic demonstration of how the drums are made.

“The blend of music and culture will make for a rich experience for our students,” said Heidi Kohne, the junior high music teacher.

“We are grateful to be able to provide these opportunities within our North Hills community.”

Ayimbota’s drums are made of mahogany wood and goatskin. He has a few drums that have been carved but need to have the hide fixed onto the top. Some of his drums will be available for purchase.
