North Hills High School Teachers Win Carnegie Science Educator Award

Awards honor interactive use of iPads and laptops in science curriculum.

Three North Hills High School science teachers who have devised an interactive biology curriculum have been chosen to receive Carnegie Science Awards for excellence and innovation in teaching.

Jackie Karenbauer, Jennifer DiPasquale and Mark Buccilli will receive High School Educator Awards for 2013 for a teaching program in which students use Apple iPads and MacBooks. They will be recognized May 3 during the 2013 Carnegie Science Awards at Carnegie Musical Hall in Oakland.

The Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh has bestowed the awards since 1997 to recognize and promote innovation in science and technology education in Western Pennsylvania at the elementary, middle school, high school and university/post-secondary levels, according to the center.

Winners of educator awards are chosen for innovations that inspire students to understand appreciate and apply science. The center also presents awards in 12 other categories.

An independent selection committee of teachers and administrators chose the North Hills teachers and other winners from among nearly 200 nominees.
