The Iraq War, 10 Years of Casualties: North Hills Feels Its Touch
Among the 196 Pennsylvanians and 4,802 Americans and allies lost in the war are three men from North Hills neighborhoods.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week—on March 19, 2003—and although it is officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.
By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 196 Pennsylvanians.

- Sgt. 1st Class Brent Allen Adams, 40, of West View, who died Dec, 1, 2005. He served with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Â Adams was killed when a roadside bomb detonated near his military truck in Ramadi. He was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and worked for Sprint PCS, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
- Spc. Robert Eugene Hall Jr., 30, of Bellevue, who died June 28, 2005. He served with the 467th Engineer Battalion of the Army Reserve. Hall was killed when a car bomb detonated near his position at the gate of his forward operating base in Ad Dujayl in northern Iraq. He was a 1993 graduate of North Hills High School and a driver for Waste Management Inc., according to the Post-Gazette.
- Sgt. Thomas Edward Vandling Jr., 26, of Bellevue, who died on New Year's Day in 2007. He served with the 303rd Psychological Operations Company, 15th Psychological  Operations Battalion, 2nd Psychological Operations Group, Vandling was fatally wounded when a roadside bomb detonated near his vehicle while on combat patrol in Baghdad. He was a 1998 graduate of Northgate High School, where he played on its varsity football team, according to the Post-Gazette.
