North Whitehall Seniors Have Their Day

North Whitehall Township joined forces with Pa. Sen. Patrick Browne (R-Lehigh) and Rep. Gary Day (R-Berks, Lehigh) to treat hundreds of seniors to a day of fun and facts at Schnecksville Fire Company Thursday.

"More townships should do this because it's an amazing thing to get a fun day and get out of the house for free," said Doris Stearns, who was representing Sen. Browne.

Today marked the 7th year North Whitehall has hosted the event and the fifth year since Browne and Day were involved.

"What really sets this event apart are the games outside," Day said.

A first for this year was the voter identification information. The controversial  requires voters to present a photo ID when voting and Browne and Day both distributed information for those who don't have one.

"At this event a lot of people are supportive of the law," Day said. "They are saying, 'that's okay, I already took care of it'."

Seniors were also invited to tour Jaindl Farms. Owner David Jaindl personally led a group of 50 seniors through the facilities. Frances Lamm, of Emmaus, was impressed Jaindl took the time to lead the two-hour tour.

"The story of their family and the turkeys are an American story and a Pennsylvania story," said Lamm. "I used to think we did the work because we cook the turkey but they really do the work because they raise them."

Lamm's husband, Frank, said he was surprised how big the Jaindl facility is. He said they saw turkeys at all stages - from eggs to full-grown.

In addition to games at the fire company, seniors were invited to play a free round of miniature golf at Spring Hill Mini Golf.

"We had more sponsors this year than ever," Township Clerk Darlene Uherick said. She said Browne's office helped organize 24 sponsors and state and local agencies.
