Forks To Host Bicycle Derby

Bicycle safety and helmet giveaways planned.

There’s always more to learn about how to safely ride a bicycle and Forks Township police are hoping for a great turnout to teach township children the rules and regulations.

On Wednesday, the police’s annual Bicycle Derby will be held from 9am to 1pm at the tennis courts of the township Community Park at Zucksville Road and Sullivan Trail.

Steve Nicholson, a bicycle officer, heads up the event and said several fun activities are on tap for the day.

Damaged or unsafe helmets will be thrown away and new ones issued courtesy of Cycle Fitters Bicycle Shop on Sullivan Trail.

“The bicycle shop will also give safety checks,” said Nicholson.

An obstacle course that will include stop signs, traffic cones, yield and pedestrian signs will also be done on a figure-8 course.

“Children have to pedal as fast as they can to the stop signs,” said Nicholson.

To help things out, police from Easton and Greenwich Township, NJ will assist in the event.

The program is funded through donations from several local banks in the area, Nicholson added.
