101-Year-Old Phoenixville Woman Passes Away

101-year-old Mary Smith was remembered for her compassion and caring for others, from "sewing clothing to a 'rock to lean on.'"

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Mary C. Smith, 101, wife of the late Melvin J. Smith, formerly of Phoenixville, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018 in Regina Community Nursing Center, Norristown. Born on January 17, 1917 in Surry County, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Jenny (Harrison) Cockerham.

Mrs. Smith moved from Louisiana at 8 years old. She had been a member of Green Tree Church of the Brethren and had been formerly employed at the G Lodge in Valley Forge. Mary loved sewing and needlepoint, was a member of sewing circles, was a great seamstress and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a huge help to a lot of people; from sewing clothing to a "rock to lean on." Mary loved her neighbors and had tight relationships with her family and friends.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter: Virginia May Walleigh, of Limerick; sister: Margaret Fox, of Royersford; two grandsons: Daniel Keller and Jeffrey Keller, of Royersford; and six great-grandchildren: Michael, Christopher, Nicolas, Anna, Emily and Mary. She was preceded in death by five brothers: William, Gilbert, Lincoln, McKinley and McCoy Cockerham.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 1078 Egypt Road, Oaks, on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 11:00 am. Officiating will be the Rev. J. Rodney O'Donnell. Interment will follow in the Green Tree Cemetery. Friends will be received from 9:30-10:45 am at the Church.
