Chester County's Phillip Dutton Wins Bronze as Team USA's Oldest Olympian

Congratulations to local hero Phillip Dutton!

Team USA's oldest Olympian, 53-year-old Phillip Dutton of Chester County has won a bronze medal in eventing at the Rio Olympics.

Eventing, which has frequently been described as the "equestrian's triathlon," includes dressage, cross country, and show jumping.

Dutton was full of praise for his horse Mighty Nice, nicknamed "Happy," whom he rode to a medal.

"WHAT A HORSE!" Dutton wrote on his website Tuesday. "Mighty Nice had just one rail down between his two show jumping rounds today to win the individual bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. Considering the incredible effort he made yesterday on cross country, I could not be more proud of the way Happy jumped today. I’ve never had a horse with a bigger heart. Even when he is tired or not feeling his best, he just keeps trying."

Dutton is a six-time Olympian, according to his Team USA athlete profile, having been selected for teams at the games in Rio in 2016, London in 2012, Beijing in 2008, Athens in 2004, Sydney in 2000, and Atlanta in 1996.

The bronze medal is his first medal at an Olympic Games.

Although he had lived in America since 1991, he did not become a U.S. citizen until 2006. He settled in Avondale, and he trains at West Grove's True Prospect Farm, which he and his wife run and own, his website states.

He placed 7th in team eventing for the United States in the 2012 games in London.

Michael Jung of Germany won gold in eventing, while France's Asties Nichols took the silver medal.
