Learn Painting Techniques from the Masters

In this art class with Adrian Martinez students learn classic techniques that may be applied to oil paintings. Martinez's years of experience in working in a museum with original paintings from this era provides unique insights into techniques used by the masters.

Painting Techniques: Grisaille and Glazing

Gain new insights into the Renaissance masters and how they achieved their color magic! Adrian Martinez offers each artist (beginners to professionals) five weeks of technical analysis along with real-time demonstrations vividly explaining the three essential stages of Renaissance oil painting. Beginning with a classic still life set up, each artist will complete a basic drawing and then move, when satisfied, to a grey toned under-painting in oil. After finishing this “grisaille,” many transparent and colorful oil glazes are added.

Adrian will guide your progress, taking into account each artist’s personal background and individual taste.

About Adrian Martinez
Adrian Martinez, internationally known artist, teacher and lecturer, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Washington, D.C. He received degrees from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Maryland (BFA), St. Martins School of Art in London, England (CS) and Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana (MA). His work has been exhibited in New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington D.C., Maryland, Delaware, Indiana, California, London and Ankara, Turkey, and is in private collections including the George W. Bush Presidential Library art collection.
