Founded: 2005 (1989)

When did you go into business?

“Steel City was formed in 2005 in Phoenixville. It essentially is a down sized version of my first company, TCB Displays, started in 1989 and also in Phoenixville.”

How did you come up with the name?

“Stole it from the café. But truth be told, I am a history buff and have always been aware of the impact the steel mill has on the town. Steel is synonymous with strength.”

Why start a business here?

“There is nothing better than working where you live. Our first employees were almost all parents of my kid’s friends. So any time school was closed we were all close by and could manage the kids at home. In today’s world of two income families that was a major benefit and was truly appreciated.”

Briefly, what business are you in?

“We design and produce exhibits and graphics for trade shows, museums, visitor centers and corporate lobbies.”

What’s the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?

“When the 9/11 incident happened all travel shut down. There were no trade shows for months. There was no income coming in during that time.”

What’s been your favorite moment/proudest achievement since opening? I would like to say that I am surrounded by really good and talented people who like to come to work every day.

How does your business give back/get involved in the community?

“I can proudly say we support the YMCA, summer league basketball and we just got a client to donate athletic equipment to two non-profit youth organizations. We also support all the local historical societies with ideas and signage. We are committed to helping insure the history of Phoenixville.”
