Rio 2016: Meet Pennsylvania's Olympic Medalists

The closing ceremonies of the 2016 Rio Olympics were on Sunday night, and as the dust settled, awe began to set in.

The United States dominated the medals table in historic fashion, winning more golds, more silvers, more bronzes, and more overall medals than any other country. Their medal total of 121 beat second place China (70) handily. Of Team USA’s 121 medals, 46 were gold.

“I don’t think there’s anything better than having the opportunity to hang gold medals on American athletes and listen to the Star-Spangled Banner,” USOC Chairman Larry Probst said on the Team USA website.

It’s the most medals ever earned by a U.S. team at the Olympics, beating the previous total high from the 2008 games in Beijing.

A total of 10 of those medals were earned by Pennsylvania athletes. Here’s a glance at the Olympic medalists from Pennsylvania

• Cierra Runge, Cochranville, women’s swimming, 4x200 meter freestyle relay, gold medal
• Nia Ali, Philadelphia, women’s track and field, silver medal, 100 meter hurdles
• Joe Kovacs, Bethlehem, men’s track and field, silver medal, shot put
• Christa Dietzen, Hopewell, women’s volleyball, bronze medal
• Miles Chamley-Watson, Philadelphia, men’s fencing, team foil, bronze medal
• Phillip Dutton, Avondale, men’s equestrian, eventing, bronze medal

Pennsylvania tied for the eighth most medals earned by any state. California led the way with 58.
