Stormy Weather Coming To PA For Mother's Day Weekend

Another weekend of potentially heavy rainfall is on tap for the greater Philadelphia area. Here's what to expect, and when.

Another weekend, another storm on the horizon. Heavy rains and even flooding are possible this Mother's Day weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for all of southeastern Pennsylvania, predicting a period or two of heavy rain is possible from Saturday night into Monday. Rain and high winds are also possible during late Friday afternoon and night and Saturday morning.

There is the potential for localized flooding of small streams, roadways and areas of poor drainage, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Rain and high winds (possible thunderstorms) are expected to arrive on Friday after 2 p.m., and could continue until 1 a.m.
  • Rain, and possible thunderstorms, are expected to arrive after 9 p.m. on Saturday. Heavy rain is likely on Sunday.

"A storm system approaching the Northeast will likely lead to an isolated threat for strong to severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.

Locally damaging winds will be the primary threat with the thunderstorms on Friday. The strongest storms may also produce small hail, according to AccuWeather.

"These thunderstorms will reach the I-95 corridor during the early-evening hours," Buckingham said. "This could cause a thunderstorm to remain heavy and gusty upon arrival."

Some of the storms can pack highly-localized damaging wind gusts and flash flooding during the afternoon and the start of the evening, according to AccuWeather. Those traveling on the interstates on Friday afternoon will want to slow down in any heavier downpour to reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

Then more rain will approach the mid-Atlantic states on Sunday. There could be enough heavy rain on Sunday for areas of flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas, according to AccuWeather.
