Local 102-Year-Old Says She Was Bypassed As Valedictorian

Mabel Bennethum sat in the audience of her high school graduation ceremony in 1927 and silently watched a male classmate give a valedictorian speech that was supposed to pass through her lips.

Now 102 years old, Bennethum was honored at this year's Oley Valley High School graduation Tuesday with the valedictorianship she was denied as a young woman.
