At the beginning of the 20th century, Phoenixville was home to one of the nation’s best pro football teams.
The legendary escapades of the Union Club of Phoenixville were recently remembered in a feature by Main Line Today.
The Union Club put up an outstanding record during the first couple of decades of the century: 95 wins, eight losses and 10 ties, the report states.

The club outscored opponents by a whopping 2,307-275. And in 1920, the club reportedly outscored their opponents 328-19.
The club’s most important game and victory may have been when they beat future NFL Hall of Famer Jim Thorpe’s Canton Bulldogs in an epic matchup in Philadelphia, the report relates.

About 17,000 turned out to watch the Union Club beat Canton at the Baker Bowl, then the Philadelphia Phillies’ ballpark, according to the report.
The club dissolved as the newly formed National Football League began to take shape.
