Pottstown JROTC Earns Distinguished Unit Honor
The cadets have won the award for the 15th year in a row.
Pottstown High School's Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) unit has once again earned an award that places them in the top ranks of the over 900 JROTC units nationwide.Â
The Distinguished Unit Award "recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations and that have distinguished themselves throughout outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC Mission of producing better citizens for America," Pottstown community relations director John Armato said in a press release.Â
This is the fifteenth year in a row that Pottstown's Unit 951PA has won the award.Â
AFJROTC leader Colonel Jake Porter said in the release, "I am extremely proud of our 121 cadets for distinguishing themselves as outstanding citizens and cadets. I knew when I first arrived in Pottstown that the unit had a longstanding tradition of excellence and I am proud to be able to be part of that continued commitment to building better citizens for America."
The unit was recognized at a recent school board meeting, where Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Sparagna and school board President Judyth Zahora presented Porter with a certificate.Â
According to the press release, the unit has participated in many activities both as a military unit and as a community service group. These include providing support and Honor Guard presentations at multiple events and programs; holding a flag folding ceremony for the Daughters of the American Revolution; assisting the Pottstown Downtown Improvement District Authority in beautification of the High Street area;  and most recently assisting in the cleanup of the Manatawny Park Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
