Schuylkill River Sojourn Still Has Openings

Registration for the annual kayaking tour began April 15 and spots are filling up fast, but there are still some weekday spaces left.

Registration for the 15th annual Schuylkill River Sojourn, taking place this year from June 1 through 7, is now underway. Saturday, Sunday and Monday are already filled, but there are still open spaces over the rest of the week.

The annual canoeing/kayaking tour is organized by the Schuylkill River Heritage Area (SHRA) in an effort to draw attention to the river as "a beautiful natural and recreational resource." The seven-day, 112-mile guided tour of the river begins in rural Schuylkill Haven and ends a week later at Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. Participants can register for the entire trip or for a smaller portions of the trip.

The trip features expert guides and three meals a day and programs at lunch and evening stops. Participants are also provided with shuttles back to their cars. This year’s theme is "A Civil War Odyssey," and the trip will focus on the region during the Civil War era. According to the SRHA, programs will include re-enactors, musical entertainment, a one-woman play, a discussion on the Underground Railroad in the region, and much more.
