Skin Cancer Screenings Offered Free At Pottstown Clinic

POTTSTOWN, PA — A regional dermatology practice is offering free skin cancer screening in its Pottstown office.

Pennsylvania Dermatology Partners (PDP) extended the offer to new patients at its Pottstown practice at 2093 E. High Street. Physician Assistant Cassandra Baier will do the screenings during office hours by appointment.

According to the American Cancer Society, more skin cancers are diagnosed in the United States each year than all other cancers combined. According to PDP, risk factors for the development of skin cancer include sunlight exposure, blistering burns in childhood — even one such burn can double the risk of melanoma — indoor tanning beds, and having more than 50 moles.

Everyone is at risk regardless of age, sex, or skin color. Melanoma usually forms in skin that has been exposed to damaging sunlight, but it can form anywhere, said PDP. Preventive measures consist of using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses that block UV radiation.

When melanoma is diagnosed in its early stages, treatment is less invasive. In fact, sometimes treatment can be as simple as a surgical procedure during a doctor's office visit.
