Trail Connection Completes Schuylkill River Trail In Montgomery County

A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the opening of the historic Schuylkill Canal Towpath on Tuesday.

Officials are saying the Schuylkill River Trail from Philadelphia to Phoenixville is “finally complete” after a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday celebrating the finish of the Schuylkill Canal Towpath Restoration Project.

The reconstruction of the 1.75 mile historic canal towpath in Mont Clare and Port Providence connects Lock 60 and the Lock Tenders House with Montgomery County’s Upper Schuylkill River Park, according to project organizers.

A linchpin of the project was the restoration of the Red Bridge, along with the creation of a 125-foot-long pedestrian bridge.

The towpath also has reinforced embankments and has been significantly widened.

The project was funded by Montgomery County, the state of Pennsylvania, and the William Penn Foundation.

It marks another important step taken in completing ”The Circuit,” the name for thelarger network of nearly 300 miles of trails that connects the Philadelphia area.

When complete, the Circuit intends on connecting 750 miles of trails.
