The star of Boogie Nights, The Departed, Ted and numerous other films will host the event, on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, on Monday, Sept. 26. Pope Francis will be in attendance.

In addition, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin will perform at the event, as will singer Marie Miller and the band The Fray. And the Eakins Oval Stage, prior to the Festival of Families, will feature comedian Jim Gaffigan.

Considering the sex, violence and profanity often associated with his work, Wahlberg may seem an unorthodox choice to perform for the Pope. But Wahlberg is a devout Catholic who is spoken in the past about how his faith helped him overcome a troubled youth.

“As a Catholic, I credit much of my success to my faith,” Wahlberg said ion a statement. “It is an honor to be a part of welcoming Pope Francis to Philadelphia and I am humbled to join this celebration.”
