Historic, 'Regal' Apartment Complex Near Wissahickon To Be Revamped

Alden Park is a century old property designed in the style of 17th century England. It's on the National Register of Historic Places.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Alden Park, a century old regal apartment complex in the Germantown section of Philadelphia near Wissahickon Park, is beginning a full window replacement project to greatly improve the efficiency and comfort of the apartment community, while preserving its historic integrity, according to a press release.

Over 7,000 windows will be replaced in apartment units. Briarwood Construction is overseeing the project’s implementation, with the window installation being performed by locally-based Graboyes Commercial Window Company.

The aluminum, double-paned, insulated glass windows will closely resemble the existing steel windows, which had fallen into disrepair. The new windows will improve comfort for residents in their apartments, provide superior protection from the elements, and much improved thermal efficiency, which will result in lower utility costs for residents, a press release states.

“Alden Park’s window renovation will vastly transform the everyday living experience for residents,” said Jonathan Leifer, Chairman and Founder of L3C Capital Partners, in a statement. “It has been a key part of our renovation plan for this historic landmark from the beginning, and we look forward to seeing it pay off for our residents while still preserving the property’s history.”

Designed by Edwin Rorke and Lawrence E. Jones in the Jacobean and Stuart style of 17th century England, Alden Park opened in 1926. Known for having prominent past residents such as Grace Kelly and Connie Mack, Alden Park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1981, according to renovators.

The window replacement will be completed in a tiered approach starting in the fall, and continue for approximately 18 months. The approximately $12.5 million window upgrade is part of a larger $60 million renovation to the property, in which all apartment units are being upgraded and amenities modernized and expanded to provide a full resort-class amenity package for residents, the release states.
