March Into Wellness

A two-day health and wellness fair in Roxborough starts Friday.

As an acupuncturist, Dave Schiman is fairly familiar with alternative healing practices.

But others in his Roxborough neighborhood may not be.

Hence Schiman’s decision to organize a wellness fair geared toward educating the public on nontraditional ways in which they can improve their health.

Schiman, of Roxborough Community Acupuncture, has teamed with chiropractor Bill Pezzello, of the neighboring Lyceum Wellness Center, to put on the first-ever “March Into Wellness” heath fair.

The two-day event will take place Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the wellness center, 445 Lyceum Avenue, Roxborough.

“I just want people to have access to it,” Schiman, in a recent interview, said about the knowledge that exists out there regarding healthful practices.

Schiman has a particular drive to educate younger members of society, a segment that is known for pushing aside healthful habits in exchange for poorer ones.

Schiman said if people started living healthier lives at a young age, they might not develop the problems that typically arrive later in life.

“Nutrition is such an important thing. I find that people who take care of themselves, who eat right and exercise, they’re much easier to treat,” he said. “It’s easier to resolve whatever issue’s going on.”

About a dozen vendors are expected to participate in the two-day fair. They include a handful of nutritionists, a chiropractor, (Pezzello, who will be offering free adjustments), practitioners of homeopathy and Bowen Technique, (another alternative medicinal practice that can help with things like Fibromyalgia, arthritis and athletic injuries), experts in natural childbirth, those familiar with Chinese medicine, a podiatrist and more.

“I just thought, why don’t we just pull it all together,” Schiman said.

In addition to the free treatment sessions, consultations and information, the event will also offer up its share of healthy foods.

Attorneys will also be on hand to discuss insurance options.

The participating vendors will take part in a question-answer session for attendees interested in learning more about the various programs discussed.

Of course, the event is also a way to raise awareness about the Lyceum Wellness Center and adjoining Roxborough Community Acupuncture.

“It’s a public service and it’s also an opportunity for people to find out about us,” Schiman said. “A lot of people know that we’re in Roxborough, but a lot of people don’t.”
