NTSB: Amtrak Crash Caused $9 Million Damage

Last month’s deadly crash of Amtrak Train 188 caused more than $9 million of damage, according to the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report released Tuesday.

The two-page document confirms that the seven-car train took the curve at Frankford Junction in Port Richmond going 106 miles per hour, well above the posted 50 mph speed limit. Eight people died and more than 200 were injured from the May 12 crash.

According to the NTSB, data from the train shows that engineer Brandon Bostian hit the emergency brake moments before the crash. Investigators are analyzing Bostian’s cellphone, but no determination has been made on whether or not he was using the phone at the time of the crash.

The NTSB has also determined that some foreign objects struck and damaged the locomotive windshield and passenger car windows, but they were not a cause for the derailment. No evidence was found that a firearm caused the damage.
