Aliquippa Surgeon Lays Off Cancer-Stricken Employee

Dr. George Visnich's attorney says he hoped she could collect unemployment benefits and not worry about performance at work.

An Aliquippa surgeon laid off employee Carol Jumper because she has cancer.

When Dr. George Visnich gave his employee of 12 years the letter, a friend took it to social media, where it created a “firestorm.”

The letter, which can be read at CBS Local Pittsburgh, states: “You are currently engaged in a battle against cancer that will be demanding physically, mentally, and emotionally. You will not be able to function in my office at the level required while battling for your life. Because of this, I am laying you off without pay as of August 11, 2014.”

Attorney Larry Kelly, who represents the Visnich family, says that the doctor did a “humanitarian thing” in hopes that Jumper will be able to collect unemployment benefits.

“Very disappointing, in that he’s trying to help this woman and he’s made out to be a villain,” Kelly told the Beaver County Times.

Jumper reportedly wants the backlash to quiet down. Her friends have created a Facebook group for emotional and financial support.
