Six Allegheny Communities Named Among Most Sustainable In PA

Most sustainable region in PA? Allegheny includes six of the 23 towns that received a 'gold' rating for sustainability statewide.

Six Allegheny Pennsylvania communities will be honored at a June 5 luncheon in Pittsburgh for achieving certification as sustainable communities.

The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification is awarded to municipalities that demonstrate a commitment to resource conservation and efficiency.

The luncheon will be hosted by Sustainable Pittsburgh, Local Government Academy, and the Pennsylvania Municipal League.

Upper St. Clair, Dormont, Moon, Pine, Baldwin, and Cranberry are 6 of 23 municipalities around the state that have been certified Gold, meaning that they are in the upper echelon of recognized towns.

Community engagement, overall sustainability, and local food were just three of the categories in which Allegheny communities received high marks.

Cranberry’s Borough Manager, Jerry Andre, is a featured speaker at the luncheon. PA Dept. of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin will also be in attendance.

Andre will address Cranberry’s various sustainability programs, their bottom line benefits, and how the certification has been productive.

Other municipalities that will have representatives speaking at the event include Warwick Township, the lone ‘Platinum’ rated township, Monaca, New Castle, and Etna.

After the luncheon, a municipal focus group will work to gain input from all attendees to create a program that would connect municipalities with individuals in the corporate sector that might be able to help consult for free on sustainability projects.
