BHCU Donates Over 1,000 Pounds Of Turkey
Some people who donated to food pantries last year now find themselves needing a helping hand. That is why BHCU took action.
This holiday season will be different for many reasons. As the community finds new ways to re-imagine family gatherings, we are also presented with new ways to help our neighbors. Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization, says the coronavirus-related economic crises could push the number of food insecure Americans to 54 million by year's end. That is a 46% increase from pre-pandemic numbers.
Before the pandemic, 9.4% of Delaware County residents were affected by food insecurities, according to Feeding America. “Our business partners and members are reporting to us that this year the number of families seeking assistance is higher than ever before,” says Ryan Conte, Head of Member Experience at BHCU, Your Delaware County Credit Union. “That is why we knew we needed to take action.”
BHCU, Your Delaware County Credit Union collaborated with a business member, Haldas Market, to purchase 10 cases of turkeys- that’s 40 turkeys weighing in at over 1,000 pounds. The turkeys were presented to the Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc. (‘CAADC’) and will be delivered to families in need just in time for Thanksgiving.
CAADC is a non-profit whose mission is to assist residents of the County to move toward economic self-sufficiency. In 2019, CAADC was able to help over 8,000 Delaware County residents with vital programs and services include housing, workforce development, and social services.
“Some people who donated to food pantries last year now find themselves needing a helping hand. We are grateful for the partnership with Haldas Market and the CAADC so that we can play a part in lending a helping hand to 40 families this Thanksgiving,” continues Conte.
