More West Nile Detected in Springfield

A dozen mosquito samples in Springfield have tested positive for West Nile virus this summer.

A week after word of the the last two mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus, it’s happened again.

Pennsylvania's West Nile Virus Control Program reported Thursday that 46 mosquito samples across the state, including the two in Springfield Township, tested positive for West Nile virus. One avian sample tested positive for the virus.

Here are the recent positive test results and species of mosquitoes from the West Nile Virus Control Program:

  • July 26: (2) Culex Pipiens
  • July 21: (2) Culex Pipiens
  • July 18: Culex Pipiens
  • July 10: Culex Pipiens and Culex restuans
  • June 28: (2) Culex Pipiens
  • June 21: Culex Pipiens
  • June 20: Culex Restuans

Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis. ---The Pennsylvania West Nile Virus Control Program said in an earlier press release.
