Springfield Man, Former Police Officer, Dies At 70

Steven R. McFarland Sr. earned the Congressional Medal of Valor for bravery for his life saving rescue of a person from a burning building.

Steven R. McFarland, Sr., 70, of Springfield, passed away on March 8, 2019 at Lankenau Hospital. Steven was born and raised in West Chester prior to moving to Springfield in 1985.

Steven is a veteran of Tredyffrin Twp Police Department in Berwyn, retiring in 2002 after 27 years. He was a proud member of Chester County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #11 for 44 years. Steven received numerous awards and recognitions during his tenure at Tredyffrin Twp PD.

In 1989, Steven received the Congressional Medal of Valor for bravery for his life saving rescue of a person from a burning building. After his retirement he was named an honorary lifetime member of the Paoli Fire Company. He also enjoyed spending most of his time at the Jersey Shore, and especially at Driftwood Campground. Steven was a regular fixture at the campground as an employee, friend, and smiling face driving around on his golf cart.

Steven had a love of antique and classic cars, carpentry and the Philadelphia Phillies. His greatest joy was his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Steven was predeceased by his parents, Carl B. and Ruth (Hallowell) McFarland, his maternal grandparents Daniel Francis and Edith Hallowell, his paternal grandparents Carl and Alice McFarland, and his precious newborn twins Robert and Christopher.

Steven is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joan (O’Hara) McFarland, 2 sons, Steven (Randy) McFarland Jr. (Amy) of Coatesville, and Daniel McFarland (Patricia), of Springfield, 3 daughters, Wendy Lauer (Michael) of Honeybrook, Courtney Stevenson (David) of Drexel Hill, and Ashley McFarland (Charles Paez) of Key West, FL., his brother Carl (Raelyn) McFarland, of Rome, GA.

Steven is also survived by his treasured 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. He was also very blessed with in-law siblings (and their spouses) who were devoted to each other.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation Thursday, March 14, 2019, 9 A.M. O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd., Springfield, PA 19064 and to his Memorial Service 11 A.M. in the Funeral home. Int. SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
