Gas Prices at Five-Year Low as Millions Take to the Roads

The average price of gas in Pennsylvania as of Sunday was $2.67.

If you’re embarking on your holiday travels in the coming days, here’s some good news for your wallet: the average price for gasoline at its lowest level in more than five years.

According to AAA, as of Sunday, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.41. That’s 15 cents less than one week ago and 41 cents less than a month ago, according to AAA.

The average price in Pennsylvania as of Sunday was $2.67.

“There’s no place like home for the holidays and lower gas prices are filling stockings with a little more cash to spend on travel this year, as Americans pay the lowest prices at the pump since 2009,” said Jana L. Tidwell, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The low prices come at a good time for millions of Americans. About 91 million Americans will take to the roads during the upcoming holiday travel period, which starts Tuesday and goes through Jan. 4, according to AAA.

AAA estimates drivers are saving more than $400 million dollars each day compared to the peak price paid earlier this year, based on daily gasoline consumption figures from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

USA Today reported that gas prices have fallen for 88 consecutive days.
