Man Threatens To Light Self On Fire In Abington Starbucks: Cops

The man was standing next to a burning vehicle and threatening to light himself on fire when police arrived.

ABINGTON, PA — A man tried to light himself on fire in Abington after lighting up his vehicle, police said.

The incident occurred at around 4:27 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Huntingdon Valley Shopping Center.

When police arrived on the scene, a vehicle was on fire in the parking lot, and the man was standing near the car pouring "some kind of incendiary liquid" all over himself, according to authorities.

Trying to evade police, the man ran inside of the nearby Starbucks. Customers and employees fled the scene as the man threatened to light himself and the store on fire.

To subdue him, police used less lethal rounds and then tackled him, but he man was still able to strike the lighter, causing a small fire on the floor.

The suspect was treated for first and second degree burns, but no one else was injured. Police said they were obtaining an involuntary committment warrant for the man.
