Montco Student Named National Geographic Bee Semifinalist

ABINGTON, PA — An Abington middle schooler has been named a semifinalist in the prestigious National Geographic state competition.

Jeremy Moore, a 7th grader at Abington Junior High School, won the school's competition, earning his place at the upcoming state competition in Harrisburg.

The National Geographic GeoBee competition, now in its 32nd year, includes an estimate 2.4 million students competing in the first round. A total of 8,661 students became school champions and were named semifinalists.

To advance, students had to answer questions like, which state is west of Lake Huron? (Minnesota). Which midwestern state is called the Buckeye state? (Ohio). Heated water eruptions are called what — geysters or cyclones? (geysers). And which country does not border the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland, Angola, or Moldova? (Moldova).

Following the competition at the State Museum in Harrisburg on March 27, and in other states around the country, each state champion will travel to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Championship on May 18 through May 21.

The winners of the state championships will receive cash awards of $1,000, $300, and $100, for first through third places, respectively. The National Champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands aboard a National Geographic ship. Learn more about the event here.
