Upper Moreland Gets $288K To Improve Intersection Safety

Good news for pedestrians and walkability in the Upper Moreland area.

UPPER MORELAND, PA — Good news for pedestrians and walkability on York Road in Upper Moreland: the township has received a significant grant from the state to improve accessibility and safety throughout the area.

The $288,750 grant is part of $8.2 million the state is disbursing to 13 different municipalities for related projects.

Specifically, the Upper Moreland project will upgrade traffic signals along York Road at both Davisville Road and Easton Road. Safety of the SEPTA rail crossing is a chief goal of the project.

Pennsylvania's Automated Red Light Enforcement project is designed to improve safety by providing automated enforcement at places where data shows red-light running has been a problem.

"This program helps communities across the state make important investments in traffic flow and safety," Gov. Wolf said. "These improvements complement PennDOT's ongoing work to improve safety and mobility across Pennsylvania."

The money for the grants comes from red-light violation fines at 31 intersections in Philadelphia. Across Pennsylvania, 123 municipalities applied for the grants.

Projects were selected by an eight-member committee, based on criteria such as safety benefits, cost and local and regional impact.
