An email sent late Sunday, Southern Lehigh middle school lacrosse coaches warn that teh Feb. 14 Board of Education meeting will fund a new position for a new junior high girl's softball team while middle school girl's lacrosse is still unfunded.
At the Jan. 10 Board of Education meeting, a motion was introduced by Board member Bill Miracle to approve funding for a Junior High girl's softball team by eliminating the JV girl's softball team.
In the email, middle school lacrosse coaches are urging families to show up at the meeting to question the board's choice to fund girl's junior high softball and not middle school lacrosse.
According to the email:
"Our girls' lacrosse program currently receives NO school funding (except for busing), instead relying on YOUR parent fees to cover all of the referee fees, uniforms and equipment costs for your daughters to play. Our coaches have been unpaid, volunteering their time since the program began eight years ago. Our team has been a part of the Middle School athletic program for EIGHT years which has fed a very successful HS program. The HS team has won 2 League Championships and 1 District Championship in their first 6 years. For eight years the Athletic Director has told us there is no money available for new sports programs. For eight years we have proven we have the numbers to sustain and grow a competitive Middle School lacrosse program - with 30-40 girls every season. And for EIGHT years the school district has expected you to foot the bill for your daughter to play lacrosse - despite field hockey and basketball being fully paid for by the school. "
The meeting begins tonight at 7:30 at Southern Lehigh High School.Â
