"Potentially Hazardous" Asteroid Passing Earth Today

Around the globe, astronomers are getting ready for the Asteroid Toutatis fly-by with live streams available for the public to watch online.

(Editor's note: This article was written Tuesday Dec. 11 2012. Asteroid 4179 Toutatis passed earth at that time and isn't expected to make another 'near earth' appearance until 2069)

With all the talk of the it's easy to forget that today, there's going to be another visitor to our galaxy.

Near-earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis will hurtle past earth at a mere 7 million kilometers away. While there is no chance that it's presence will affect earth, the internet is filled with search queries for asteroid collisions. Toutatis is classified as a "potentially hazardous" object due to its frequency and proximity to earth.
