Southampton Chamber Music Society Delights Listeners
Since 1992, the Southampton Music Society has supported the thriving genre.

The Southampton Chamber Music Society (SCMS) continues its 22nd season with a June 9 performance at the Old School Baptist Meeting House, located at 2nd Street Pike at Maple Avenue in Southampton.
The performance, which will begin at 3 p.m., will feature the following repertoire:
- “Trio in G Major, Op. 12, no 4” – Tomaso Giordani
- “Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp” – Claude Debussy
- “Intermezzo” – Zoltán Kodály
- “Concerto for Flute and Harp, K. 299” – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (arr. Bob Litterell)
“We try to keep the choice of repertoire, not necessarily familiar, but accessible,” James Day, a founding member of the SCMS, said.

According to the SCMS website, Day has played as principal viola with orchestras in both America and Europe, including the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestra of Teatro San Carlo.
As a native of Upper Southampton, Day returned home in 1990, and said that he noticed something missing in his community.

“There seemed to be a need for more chamber music in the area,” Day said.
By 1992 Day joined fellow professional Classical musicians Nicole Lambert, flute and Cheryl Dungan Cunningham, harp, and began local performances for the public.
“Also, we wanted to provide the opportunity to professional musicians to perform locally,” Day said.
Day describes the performances as an informal event, in which the performing members will speak directly with audience members, and help them understand the history of certain pieces, demonstrate particularly techniques used in the piece, as well as more about the composer.
Proceeds from the concert benefit the Southampton Chamber Music Society, and tickets are available at the door. Tickets cost $14 for general admission and $9 for students and seniors.
Performing at the June 9 Southampton Chamber Music Society concert will be:
- Doris Dungan, flute
- Emily Guglielmi, violin
- James Day, viola
- Carolyn Ellman, cello
- Cheryl Dungan Cunningham, harp
Future performances will take place on Aug. 4 and Sept. 8.
